Meet Promise Gurung & Pooja Rana: A Newly Opened Gem Bringing Authentic Nepali Flavors to Hong Kong

Nestled in the bustling heart of Yau Ma Tei, where temple incense drifts past neon signs and the hum of Jordan Road never quite fades, Maiti Gharhas quietly opened its doors as Hong Kong’s newest love letter to Nepal. Launched by couple Promise Gurung and Pooja Rana, this cozy spot is more than a restaurant—it’s a childhood memory reborn, a promise to share the soul-warming flavors they grew up eating with everyone in Hong Kong.

Meet Promise & Pooja

Promise Gurung and Pooja Rana are partners in life and in their big dream. Growing up in Nepal, their happiest moments happened around the family table with simple plates of dal bhat, steaming momos, and sweet desserts shared with loved ones. Those flavors stayed with them when they moved to Hong Kong, and they knew that one day they had to bring them here.

At first, Pooja wasn’t sure about opening a restaurant. But Promise believed in the idea so strongly and he reminded her how much joy those home-cooked meals brought them that she found the courage to say yes.

After considering other businesses, they chose Nepali food because it’s who they are. Every spice, every recipe, and every late-night taste test is a direct line to the kitchens of their childhood.

The Meaning Behind Maiti Ghar

In Nepali, “Maiti Ghar” means “the home of the mother’s side”—your maternal family home, the place where you’re always welcomed with open arms and a full plate. That’s exactly the feeling Promise and Pooja want you to have when you walk through their door. In fast-paced Hong Kong, Maiti Ghar is a little pocket of warmth, a maternal home away from home.

A Journey of Taste and Perseverance

Opening in Yau Ma Tei wasn’t easy. The area already had several Nepali restaurants, and in the beginning, not many people came. Some days were quiet, but Promise and Pooja never stopped believing. They relied on word-of-mouth, happy customers telling friends, friends posting photos, and photos bringing new faces. Slowly but surely, the tables filled. Today, Maiti Ghar is buzzing with regulars who can’t get enough of the authentic flavors.

To make every dish perfect, Promise ensures to source fermented ingredientsfrom his village back in Nepal—the real stuff, which you can’t find in stores. They taste, tweak, and taste again to guarantee authentic flavors.  Recipes are simplified on purpose as well so the true taste of Nepal comes through loud and clear.

What Makes Maiti Ghar Special

In a city full of choices, here’s why customers keep coming back:

1. The Only Place for Traditional Nepali Beverages & Desserts

From homemade tongba (warming rice-based drinks) to juju dhau, Maiti Ghar is the only restaurant in Hong Kong serving these treasured  beverages and sweet treats.

2. Pure, Authentic Flavors

Minimal spices, maximum taste. Every curry, every momo filling, every pickle uses fermented ingredients straight from Promise’s village. One bite and you’re sitting on a porch in Nepal.

3. That Heartfelt Home Feeling

Warm lighting, friendly smiles, and portions big enough to share. It’s not just dinner—it’s family time.

Looking Ahead

Promise and Pooja’s dream is simple: to keep serving the most authentic Nepali flavors in Hong Kong and become the place everyone thinks of when they crave a true taste of home. With every happy customer spreading the word, they’re well on their way.

A Message from Promise & Pooja

“Don’t settle. Strive for perfection.”

That’s what they live by. They tasted every single dish, again and again, traveling to Nepal, training with chefs, adjusting recipes late into the night just to make sure you get the real thing.

They want Maiti Ghar to set the standard for authentic Nepali food in Hong Kong. So when you visit, know that every bite has been made with love, childhood memories, and a promise to never compromise on flavor.

Whether you’re Nepali and missing home, or just curious to try something new, come to Maiti Ghar in Yau Ma Tei. Let Promise and Pooja welcome you like family, pour you a traditional drink, and serve you the flavors they grew up loving.

One visit, and you’ll understand why “Maiti Ghar” really does feel like coming home.

Next time you’re looking for a place to relax, recharge, and enjoy a meal that’s both authentic and innovative, drop by Maiti Ghar.
